Captain John Smith and William Bradford were both American settlers from England. They came to the new world for different reasons which impacted the way they settled down and lived. While John Smith came to the new world seeking to become rich, William Bradford came to the new word to find religious freedom and worship. They were both settlers and leaders. Because they went to the new world for different purposes their stories were different. Although these men were both from England and came to settle in America, they had different purposes and even their writings were different because of the way they presented their information.

Bradford and others came to the new world because they wanted religious freedom and to be able to worship. They were puritans. He mentions God throughout the entire story. “...but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards, which hung overboard, and ran out at length…” ( William Bradford, 77). In the beginning of the story he gives credit to God for their protection. He thanks God for helping them get through the storm and arriving safe and sound. In the short story The General History of Virginia, John Smith wrote about himself and how he can become rich. He recorded events and his writings were not meant to teach anything or to give advice to anyone who would follow him. He begins writing his story about his voyage on the ship and continues writing about founding the colony. Throughout the story he makes himself seem better than the natives. In his eyes, he is civilized and the natives are not and that is how he portrays them in his story: “...each hour expecting the fury of the savages…”(John Smith,
