Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X were two very influential black activists during the American civil rights movement. While both men sought equality for African Americans, they had very different approaches. MLK fought for equality through peaceful protests and marches but Malcolm X challenged MLK’s nonviolent stance and urged followers to defend themselves “by any means necessary.”
Their incongruity is likely a result of their tremendously different young lives. MLK was a gifted student who grew up in a prosperous black neighborhood with this family. In contrast, when Malcolm was young his father was brutally murdered by black legionnaires and Malcolm was separated from his mother and placed in foster care. In eighth grade he dropped
