While William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt have similar takes on foreign policies they definitely have some differences. Throughout our years as a country America has had many presidents with all different policies. Considering the fact that Roosevelt was William Mckinley's vice president could mean that they have very similar views when it comes to foreign policies, but in fact they do have many differences. President McKinley's main priority was to protect the American people. His foreign affair policy definitely reflected that 100 percent. He prefered not getting involved in wars with other countries. When the time came around to go to war with Spain it took alot for him to be ready to send our troops to war overseas. He was very reluctant to go to war many unfortunate events occurred including the sinking of the U.S.S Maine. The American people did not agree with president Mckinley and wanted the U.S to get involved with the war. Another incident of bad mouthing Mckinley in a letter from the spanish ambassador was a sever blow to the country. Being an American means so much to a lot of people and as an American you have a duty to stand up for your country. Being the proud, patriotic country that we are Americans wanted to get involved even more when they read about this in their local papers.
