The Articles of Confederation were the first attempt at a new American government and they assisted in organizing the government during the Revolutionary War. The Articles were created to establish a strong, healthy relationship between the 13 states. The Articles were sent to the states for ratification in 1777, but all states did not ratify it until 1781 so it did not take effect until then. The form of government that the Articles set up was a limited government because the powers of the government were limited to avoid tyranny by protecting property and individual rights. The men who wrote it wanted to avoid the creation of a central government like that of King George the III.
