The Battle of Monitor and Merrimack, also known as the Battle of Hamptons Roads,or the Battle of the Ironclads took place on March 9, 1862 in Hampton Roads Virginia, a harbour in the James River. The northern built Merrimack was salvaged by the Confederates and renamed the Virginia. The Union ship was called the Monitor and was commanded by John Worden. The Virginia was commanded by Franklin Buchanan. Each side had a small number of units and crew members The battle began with the two ships circling and firing at each other. However, this continued for about two hours and neither side could do significant damage to the other because the cannon balls kept reflecting off of the ship's iron sides. There were no reported casualties or injuries
