Between 1800 and 1860 the American North and South expanded in size and power. With any expansion in power and size comes the thirst for more of each. As president Lincoln believed, the Civil War was inevitable by the year 1854 but as we know did not fully begin until 1861. White, confederate, southern slave owners were hoping to spread slavery throughout the west and north of the Missouri Compromise line. Northerners failed to agree and were determined to keep slavery from spreading into new western territories. The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 continued the path into the Civil War.
