1. In applying the generalist intervention model in assessing families, I learned that it’s two different methods for family assessment, the quantitative and qualitative. Qualitative assessments Social Workers use words, observation, pictures, and graphs to analyze and understand families’ problems. Quantitative uses numbers, mapping, and measuring techniques to help them to arrive at a numerical indicators. I learned you use the families’ strengths and resilience as the main focus of the assessment. I also learned, when you are assessing families, you have to consider the whole family. Each individual that plays a part in the family’s situation becomes a part of the assessment. This allows the Social Work insight on what’s going on with the family and how the family interact. Each person has their own interpretation of the problem so, in order to understand the dynamics they all need to be assessed.

Applying the generalist intervention model in planning, I learned once again that you have to be mindful of the needs for the entire family. For example, the family might need counseling with all the family members together. However, they still might need individual counseling as well. I found this part a little difficult because I had to figure out intervention for everyone at the same time in addition to any individual needs as well. Then I had to make sure the interventions are arranged according to its importance. I also learned that intervention could be done right inside the office. It was an eye opener for me when you gave examples about how you did a lot of your own intervention by doing things like helping the family to better communicate with one another. I always imagined intervention as being a referral to an outside
