The way a person handles a situation can also affect the outcome of the situation. In both “The Hitchhiker” by Lucille Fletcher and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonists go through a challenging conflict. The two main characters handle their situation differently. In “The Hitchhiker” the protagonist handles his problem in an extreme and angered way. In “The Most Dangerous Game” the protagonist is calm and resourceful throughout his situation. In both stories the main characters come across a tough situation, but handle it in different ways. In “The Hitchhiker” the protagonist, Ronald Adams, is driving along Route sixty-six when he notices a hitchhiker following him, appearing everywhere he goes. At first Ronald ignores him, but when he notices him everywhere he goes, he gets frightened. Ronald tries to get away from the hitchhiker by speeding, but when he still sees the hitchhiker appearing, he gets even more frightened. He suddenly falls of and swims to an island nearby, where he finds a building. In the building he finds a man named General Zaroff, who is as skilled at hunting as he is. They talk and soon become good friends, until General Zaroff tells Rainsford that he does not hunt animals, but instead hunts humans. Rainsford does not like this so he decides to leave, but by doing so General Zaroff decides to hunt him. Instead of being scared, Rainsford stays calm and is resourceful, which help him to survive.
