During the American Revolution, there were patriots and loyalists. Loyalists were people in the colonies that supported British rule. Patriots wanted to be free from Britain. The loyalists were hated by the patriots because the colonists were treated brutally and taxed heavily, but they still wanted to abide in British rule.
