Societies in sub-Saharan Africa differed from parts of the eastern hemisphere by having foundations of agricultural economy and iron-working skills, being based on kin groups, and being dependent on trade for facilitating the diffusion of Islam. For example, male heads of families governed the village and worked together to organize the work for their own groups. Clans and families served as the main foundation of economic and social order in agricultural societies, which led to males obtaining positions of governance. Being under authority of male heads influenced civilization by giving relatives lands to cultivate and allowing people to receive equal distribution of harvests. In addition, districts fell under leadership of Chiefs.
