The two pieces of artwork that are being compared are the statue of David done by Michelangelo and same statue which was first created by Donatello. They were both created in the Renaissance age about 100 years apart and contain my similarities. The Italian Renaissance age was a period of artistic and social innovation from the 14th-16th centuries. These two statues are both portraying David as a biblical hero who fought and killed Goliath, but both portray David as a nude man standing tall and victorious. These two statues represent a weaker power overcoming a larger power which can be a metaphor for this time period. Both Michelangelo and Donatello’s statue of David, have different effects on viewers and their impacts on society can differ in the way they wanted to portray a specific message. His statue of David was created between 1501-1504 and stood 14 feet tall. The statue was presented as a nude muscular man with a great physique. “His veins are visible in his arms and hands as he clutches the stones with one hand and the slingshot in the other” (Italian Renaissance). It was commissioned for the Cathedral of Florence and was meant to be part of a series of large statues that would go in the niches of the cathedral’s tribunes. “Thanks to its imposing perfection, the biblical figure of David became the symbol the liberty and freedom of the Republican ideals, showing Florence’s readiness to defend itself” (Michelangelo's David). Michelangelo's David shows his knowledge of anatomy, as well as his confidence in handling his tools. Both Versions of the statue of David, have many similarities and they are constructed with a very similar pose and they both were constructed extremely well.
