Robert Frank once said, “The black and white colors in photographs can symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected”. In the same way, the classic story, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee indicates that every character has their own motif in life such as Tom Robinson and Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley. Both people have a great impact on those around them as they embody the innocence of a mockingbird. Arthur and Tom both personify the same positive symbol which controls their path and choices. To begin, Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley is introverted, but that does not stop him from caring yet it shows that he fears the outside and that he really is innocent like a mockingbird . Tom Robinson is industrious and worked without fail yet he was being framed for a horrid crime which is raping Mayella. Mr. Deas explains the work he received from Tom, “‘That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’ trouble outa him” (pg. 261 ¶4). Just as Mr. Deas explained, Tom did everything he could for eight years and just like a mockingbird he focused on what he was supposed to do and what he was supposed to be which was a worker. Further, Tom being the helpful and kind person he was; liked to help Mayella out with the chores she couldn’t do on her own. Tom truthfully describes his interactions with Mayella, “I was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and I knowed she didn’t have no nickels to spare” (pg. 256 ¶ 4). To clarify, Tom liked to help Mayella out since no one else did and he did it without pay which shows that he represents a mockingbird through his considerate personality. Even though Tom did the best he could do while working for different people, just as a mockingbird, but he was still set up to be the one who beat Mayella because the biased population found the color of his skin
