The Flood of Noah and The Flood of Gilgamesh are exceedingly similar short stories at the base but, in specific details they are tremendously different. The Flood of Noah is one of the first stories in the Bible and it begins exploring the nature of God. In this story, God created the world and the nature around us and was saddened when he has seen man resort to such sins. God did not want man to continue to let such sins happen, so he decided to destroy his creations. The Flood of Gilgamesh was composed in a poem form. It was later translated into a short story. Enlil the God of earth, wind and air ordered a flood to destroy mankind. Ea had been sworn to secrecy, but he betrayed the gods plans to Utnapishtim. Ea warned him that the gods would be sending a terrible flood. He told him to build a boat of immense dimensions, ten dozen cubits in height (approximately 180 feet) with six decks and one acre of floor space, and load it up with the seed of each living thing and with his family and possessions. “ I say, and build a boat. These are the measurements of the bark as you shall build her: let her beam equal length, let her deck be roofed like the vault that covers the abyss; then take up into the boat the seed of all living creatures.”(pg 146). The Flood of Noah's Ark closely parallels the story of creation: a cycle of creation, un-creation, re creation, in which the ark plays a pivotal role. Noah was warned that the flood was coming and was instructed to build the ark. God spells out to Noah the dimensions of the ark: 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width and 30 cubits in height (450 × 75 × 45 ft or 137 × 22.9 × 13.7 m). It had three internal divisions a door in the side, and a sohar, which may be either a roof or a skylight. The two boats constructed were similar in height and width. This is one of the many similarities about these two …show more content…
On his travels he met a man name Utnapishtim who told him stories about how to become immortal. “ Go, Gilgamesh I permit you to pass through the mountain of Mashu and through the high ranges; may your feet carry you safely home. Utnapishtim said to Gilgamesh, “ I will reveal to you a mystery, I will tell you the secret of the gods””(Pg. 145). The Gods ended up finding out about this and got very angry. “Tell them this: I have learned the Enlil is wrathful against me, I dare no longer walk in his land nor live in his city”(Pg. 146).The gods wanted to flood the earth because they said Mankind or the people were too noisy for them. “The uproar of mankind is intolerable and sleep is no longer possible by reason of the babel”(pg. 146). In the book , Noah's Ark he was told to make a boat and save certain animals because God found wickedness in mankind. The bible records on Genesis chapter 6: “GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing,
