Our first experiences have a big impact on how we see things from then on. According to By Any Other Name, An Indian Father's Plea and Two Ways to Belong in America. In the passage An Indian Fathers Plea, his son Wind Wolf begins to hate who he is because he is being bullied in school for it. From the way he has his long beautiful Native American hair to not wanting to attend the festivals they have in his culture. "Yesterday for the third time in two weeks he came home crying and said he wanted to have his hair cut" The children tormented him and the teacher called him a "slow learner" He was being teased because of his culture, so Wind Wolf wanted to cut his hair so they'd leave him alone and so he could fit in. I'm assuming his first experience in a west coast public school was terrible and heartbreaking. This negative first experience made such a big impact on him that this poor little five year old wanted to throw away who he used to be and its a shame.
