Comparing Beowulf, 'Blackheart And The Deep'

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Helen Keller. We read many short stories about risk in our English class. We read Beowulf, Blackheart by Mark Brazaitis, and The Deep by Anthony Doerr. All these short stories involve risk in different ways. Beowulf was an epic hero and took risks because he wanted to go out and prove himself to everybody. He went out and risked his life fighting monsters that nobody else could kill. In Blackheart Emily is risking her life just to try and not feel so lonely anymore. Lastly in The Deep Tom has a sickness that makes it very difficult for him to do things. But tom goes out there and risks his life.
First of all Beowulf might just be the greatest, most strongest hero that everyone counted on while he was alive. He would go out, slay monsters and keep the people of his towns safe. Beowulf slayed

Emily a girl with divorced parents moves to Argentina with her mother and her boyfriend. Emily had problems feeling loved, or maybe wanted. So she went to Blackheart “.. an animal as cruel and vicious as any animal on earth, or so Daniel told her.” Lines 47-48. Blackheart was a dog that Emily felt she connected with because they were both lonely, at least that's what Emily thought. But Emily was told to stay away from that dog because he was taught to kill anything that he saw. Lines 51-52 “Blackheart is on guard, and he’s trained to kill whomever he finds.” But Emily didn’t listen and one night while everyone was away she went to go visit Blackheart in his cage. The night she visits Blackheart she took the biggest risk, she let him out of his cage. “But her hand, which she can barely feel as her heart thunders, acts otherwise. It snaps the deadbolt to the side.” Line 212-214. The night that emily took that risk was not worth it because at the end of that risk Emily dies. Blackheart killed her like he was trained to
