Comparing Brother (Scarlet Ibis) And Romeo And Juliet

Being able to relate to a character is important; it can make the reading experience more immersive. Even though the stories we read this semester were very different, some characters managed to be similar to one another. Although they were unalike in appearance, their motives and ideals were akin. Even if I don't personally associate with these two characters I have in mind, their similarities are important to look at.
The two characters I found to be resembling each other were Brother (The Scarlet Ibis) and Lord Capulet (Romeo and Juliet). They both are quite selfish and refuse to see things from the other's point of view. On Lord Capulet's side, he is passive about Juliet getting married because she hasn't refused yet. However, Brother is immediately affected by Doodle's inability to walk. It is only once Juliet refuses to marry Paris that our characters become alike. After Juliet's refusal, Lord Capulet is terribly upset and stops caring about what Juliet wants and threatens her with punishment. The first thing Brother does once Doodle can talk is guilt him into learning how to walk. Any time that he refuses, Brother also gets upset, similarly to Lord Capulet. The time progression is askew, but ultimately the two end up having similar reactions. Also, the lessons they learned are somewhat similar as well. Juliet and Doodle both in the end wind up being dead due to the other's recklessness. Despite the fact that Doodle didn't technically kill himself like Juliet, in a way, he did. While he was reluctant in wanting to learn, he did consent to overworking himself eventually. He refused to put himself above Brother. In this way, he is very different from Juliet, who killed herself for reasons unrelated to Lord Capulet.
