Throughout the play Julius Caesar by william Shakespeare there are several speeches given by several characters. In Julius Caesar, Caesar is murdered by being stabbed by conspirators who are terrified of Julius Caesar being supreme leader. After his death two main speeches given are between Brutus and Antony. Brutus’s speech is about how they have to kill Caesar for the better of Rome, Meanwhile Antony's speech is how Caesar loved and cared for the people of Rome and was good to every single one of them. The townspeople were very moved by both of the speeches and did not know what to believe. This meant that when Antony gave his speech it had to be extremely persuasive so that it made Brutus’s look bad. Antony had to be respectful and get everyone to question Caesar's death to win them over. Antony's speech was more convincing because of his use of repetition. He repeatedly says, “But Brutus says [Caesar] was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man .”(3.2.- 84) Antony is mocking Brutus’s speech and using a sarcastic tone to make it noticeable to the common people that Brutus is trying to make it seem like everything he is doing is “honorable”. Brutus uses repetition in his speech but was not able to inveigle his way into the common people’s mind the way Antony does. Brutus uses it when he says “ Believe me for mine honour and have respect to mine honour that you may believe.”(3.2.- 5) In his speech he keeps saying how honorable Caesar is but it is not as convincing as Antony is.
