Catherine Gildner’s “Too Close to the Falls” reflects on Catherine’s childhood adventures and one sectiom of this creative non-fiction was the introduction of Warty. “I think she deserves a medal for getting up in the morning” (196), these are the inspirational words from Cathy’s dad regarding Warty. She wasn’t treated like any other human being, matter of fact; she was rejected from society because of her appearance caused by a disease known as neurofibromatosis. I also knew a kid from high school called Samuel that had Melanocytic nevus of acral skin, this disease changes the color of your skin to a darker tone and this resulted in social deprivation and loneliness. Samuel, on the other hand, had more physical incidents where kids would paint on his skin with different colors to make fun of his skin color in art class and that didn’t bother him for some reason. Cathy described Warty’s appearance by providing a comparison of her warts: “Some of her larger skin tumors had the consistency of cauliflower” (188) or even using a metaphor saying: “Her skull looked as though she wore a Harlequin hat with a pointy floppy crown” (188).Samuel had most of his skin stretched out as if he had been burned and he wore a skull cap probably because the area of his head was sensitive And would results in pain if exposed
