Many orphans come from abandoned or deceased families. Two characters named Tree-ear and Ruckel share their experience in very different ways. Tree-ear is a fictional character; however, through his actions the reader is able to fully understand what life for an orphan in the 12th century would be like. However, Ruckel is a modern-day orphan from Romania, and he shares his experience in an article written in the 20th century. Although centuries apart one can learn the shared experience of both as well as the great divide.
