Comparing Cheever's The Five-Forty-Eight And My Sisters Marriage

Everyone is similar yet unique in their own way. Many people have similar goals in life, yet how they get there is very different. At times they may even encounter similar situations, but the way they interpret the concept is very different. In the two short stories, “The Five-Forty- Eight” by John Cheever and, “My Sisters Marriage” by Cynthia Marshall Rich both found in Point of View, describe of two men with different values, and lifestyles working through similar disagreements in their lives. In the two short stories, both Dr. Landis and Blake have similar, yet different character traits; for example, manipulation strategies, different types of relationships and, lastly, their own interpretation from their situation.
Blake is described as a young gentleman, who feeds off of others that do not know there self and because of that gets involved with a women, other than his wife, thus shifting his way of thinking for a little while. According to the Blake, when Mrs. Dent held him captive, he realized that no one was looking at them (qtd. John Cheever 372-3). Blake and Dr. Landis have similar traits; such as, victim like conduct, gentlemen, and worried. They have similarities but the reason for these traits are very different. With Dr. Landis, his manipulation strategies are similar to Blake because they both act as if they are victims and how they feel trumps everyone. Dr. Landis relationships are different compared to Blake because of the fact that Dr. Landis is trying to be a mother and father. In that way he is being an over protective father and acts as if he know everything about anything. He shows his daughters that there is nothing else they need in their lives and that he is
