Before New York City and Sayuri, there was Chiyo. A grey eyed girl living with her sick mother, old father and elder sister. Nothing else made her extraordinary other than her eyes, until she caught the attention of Mr.Tanaka. At the time, Chiyo thought Mr.Tanaka wanted to adopt her into his family but her naive belief came crashing down when she, along with her sister were sold instead. Mr.Tanaka convinced her father that a life in Kyoto would better than a life of a poor fisherman’s daughter. Chiyo and her sister were checked and evaluated like cattle for slaughter before being forced into a train headed towards their new life.

Kyoto was a strange place, compared to Chiyo’s old home, the city was an exotic and mind blowing sight. There
