Comparing Columbus's Letter To The King And Queen Of Spain

In the letter Columbus wrote to the King and Queen of Spain he exudes their royalty as being superior to him. In his letter, he describes an island that offers an abundance of land for agriculture and with a location that makes it easier to exchange goods. Columbus continues with his persuasion tactics with them by acknowledging that settlers of the island would be able to establish towns which would make it easier to transition into colonization. Columbus writes “the land being safer and better for farming and trading, and because it will serve as a place to which t hey can return and from which they can carry on trade with the neighboring islands” (1). If the appointed persons or the settlers commit fraud they will be punished to the fullest extent. This is Columbus’s attempt to dissuade any fraud on the part of any settlers who come to the island nation, and in an effort to maintain the gold’s value to everyone, Columbus proposes that it can only be done as seasonal hunting. Columbus also explains methods of transporting the riches or any trades for that matter by the ships, to be under lock and key, and would need to be documented reassuring its safety. In addition to these safety measures the King would delegate someone on the ship with the riches being taken along with the magistrate to check all items to assure everything is accounted for and present.
