Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We have learned to fly like birds, and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers.” These words, expressed so simply and civilized, were mild in relation to the immense struggle in the fight for racial equality. The Civil Rights Movement, which was a volatile time in our history, brought about the rise of two charismatic leaders for its cause. These two leaders, whom are Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X, where both powerful and compelling with their words, how they used them, and the responses that they drew from their fellow man. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an important leader during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. He was powerful and inspiring in the words he chose, and he drew people in, gaining support and momentum for the cause. In his remarkable speech, or “I Have a Dream…”, he depicts the future of his and many other African American children will be able to live peacefully and equally. In one of the many paragraphs in the famed speech “I Have a Dream…” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “I have a dream that my little four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream… I have a dream that one day in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping of the words of interposition and nullification, one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and girls as sisters and brothers.” This quote helps embrace his dream… his message… that one day there will be no advantages by color, instead everyone, despite their differences, will be considered racially equal.
