Stephen King once said, “Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They are both fruit but taste completely different.” This quote is true when it comes to the novel and movie of the Great Gatsby. In the novel and the movie there are many things that are similar and different. A few of them are the way the american dream is brought about, how Myrtle is portrayed to the audience and how the second party in New York was shown. These similarities and differences are slight but have a major impact on how the whole book or movie is viewed.

In both the novel and movie the party was at Tom and Myrtle’s apartment in New York. The same people attended the party and the party was so that Nick could meet Myrtle. There were also things that were different from the book to the movie. In the book the party was calm where the guest just sat around, drank, and talked with each other, where as in the movie the party was crazy, there was a lot of drugs, and people were acting off the wall crazy. This was not something that was a major change but it was big enough that the director of the movie filmed changed the party to where it was crazier than it was in the book. Luhrmann might have done this because in today's society a party is not viewed as fun if it is boring.Where in the book the party was calmer because that is how they partied back in that day. Another thing that was a small detail but changed a lot was that in the movie Nick woke up at the apartment but in the movie he woke up at home. Luhrmann put Nick waking up in his own house probably to re-alliterate how crazy the party really was and how wasted Nick was that he did not remember how he got
