Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street presents a girl who is in her early adolescent years, whose family is from a Spanish culture. She introduces the reader to her lifestyle, her home, the neighborhood they were living in and how she wishes that one day they would live in the dream house that her parents told her about. Toni Cade Bambara’s The Lesson is about a young girl, Sylvia, living in a New York City. She and her friends are evolving their tactics to cope with life as they know it. Sylvia has adopted the pose of a know-it-all who can figure out things for herself. In spite of the cultural differences that exist among the protagonists, the short stories/excerpts address universal emotions and conflicts that are shared by all humans. Although the stories introduce two young from different cultures both authors introduce two young girls around the same age, yet experience the different things, both stories address the same conflicts and emotions and both protagonist response the way.

Both, Esperanza and Sylvia are dynamic characters, characters who undergoes an important inner change. The same aspirations of hope for a better life. The protagonist from the house of Mango Street was hoping that one day her parents would move to the house they’ve been telling her about while the protagonist from The Lesson was hoping and that she will get out of the poor neighbor, she was determined to let no one beat her at nothing. Everyone is hoping and striving for something better. Some are hoping for a better life while others are hoping to get out of a situation. Having hope will encourage one to look at the brighter side of their situation. One should not look down on someone or their way of
