In the letters between Abigail Adams and her husband John Adams she encourages her husband to think about the need and rights of women as well when they draft the new codes of law. Abigail comes up with ideas that are very similar to those in Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. For one Abigail makes it clear that if women’s rights and their treatments aren’t being paid attention to then they are determined to start what she threats is going to be a rebellion, and that women will not take part in something where they will have no voice. That is very similar to the enlightenment idea that Jefferson portrays at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence, the colonies felt that they weren’t being heard and weren’t being treated fairly so they decided that they were going to break away from Great Britain and create the thirteen United States of America. …show more content…
She encourages him to use their power for the happiness and well being of women, instead of allowing men to have this unlimited power over their wives put some limits on the power a man should have and with the power that they do have allow them to use it to recognize their wives as a being and put them under their protection only for their happiness. This concept of happiness is a concept that is also a huge factor in Jeffersons declaration. The government allows the people to alter or abolish it and institute a new government, one that would be based on the foundation of the peoples safety and happiness.
