On May 14, 1803 Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea, and myself started out on an expedition on the recently purchased Louisiana Louisiana Territory. The goal of our expedition was to find an all water route to the Pacific-NW Passage. Given that the Louisiana Territory was unexplored, Thomas Jefferson sent the Corps of Discovery out on an expedition with the following goals: Explore the Missouri River and find an all water route to the Pacific. Treat Native Americans in the best manner and find out as much about their life and traditions as possible. Take careful observations of the plants, animals, geographical features, and climate (soil, production). Pay close attention to longitude and latitude and make a map of your route. Lewis, a skilled mapmaker, definitely knew his way around. He was said to be “undoubtedly the greatest pathfinder this country has ever known.” He was a military man with great survival skills. Lewis was a brave, natural leader, he faced many challenges and complications during the expedition and overcame them. Lewis was actually shot in the thigh by one of his men. He was a complex, emotionally troubled man. He was on the verge of falling into the deep, dark abyss of insanity. He was depressed and a very heavy drinker. It is thought that Meriwether Lewis committed suicide but not a proven fact. Clark was a soldier, outdoorsman, and, like Lewis, a mapmaker. Clark was “the rod in the spine of Lewis.” Lewis certainly wasn't weak but Clark’s ability to deal with all of the uneducated men made Lewis seem harsh and intelligent.
