Comparing Menelaus Relationship With Telemachus In Homer's Odyssey

In search for some answers about his father, Telemachus leaves home and travels to find out more about his missing father. As he travels he becomes a guest to many kings. We continue to see the importance of good host/guest relationship when he stays at Menelaus’s kingdom. As soon as Telemachus arrived at his kingdom, he was bathed by one of the women and then was welcomed to a feast. He tells Telemachus “…and we must look to Zeus henceforth to keep us safe from harm…and bring the men themselves within to share our feast” At this point Menelaus is considered a good host because he first welcomed Telemachus; a stranger, fed him and them asked for who he was. It was very important for a host to welcome strangers into their homes and to feed them, while guests had a responsibility to be thankful and show the same respect. Courtesy during Homers time is similar and different to how people treat each other in todays world. Times have changed, people don’t ask for food or shelter anymore because it is available everywhere. Now we see more places that offer someone a room to sleep in and food to eat. Hospitality is still similar because of the respect one gives another. For example, if someone would get hurt during a soccer game, there are always other players that will show respect and hospitality towards the player but never ask for it in return. Not only that, but when family or friends come from a different country or city, the host always shows great hospitality towards them. They would give them a place to eat and sleep just like how the people during Homers time did. Even though the way of hospitality during Homers time is not around, it is still much similar to the way hospitality works in the modern
