In the story “Two Ways to Belong in America” “two sisters from Calcutta, India, Mira and Bharati came to America in the 1960’s to receive their degrees at the University of Iowa for child psychology and preschool education and creative writing when their plans changed(404).” The sisters had their goals and expectations, knowing what they wanted to do with their lives. “The plan for the two sisters was to stay in America for two years, then return to India and marry the grooms their father had chosen for them (404).” Within this country it is the normal to get married by their fathers choosing but could deny it if that is not what they wanted. Within the next two years “Mira married an Indian student and acquired the labor certification (405).”
