In many situations, the easy way out is to simply back off and be safe. It takes courage to stand up against the dangerous situations and take the right decision. Courage is that one step forward that allows you to accomplish a goal or even attempt a task in a challenging situation. Corey in the short story “ Over The Edge” and Theresa from “The Kayak” reveals the true meaning of courage from a physical point of view. In each case, these characters finds themselves in a life threatening situation. Even if they do not achieve what they are set out to do, they make a difference in their society by showing physical courage.

She is paralyzed and can not use her legs. In Spite of that she attempted to save a wind surfer who had little to no experience. “My kayak flips. I'm sitting upside down in the water” (spring,35) This quote demonstrated the physical courage that Theresa obtained during this death awaiting situation. By taking a risk to paddle a kayak with paralyzed legs is extremely dangerous but her physical courage allows her to help the windsurfer despite how many obstacles occur for Theresa. Therefore Theresa shows a tremendous amount of physical courage. Theresa made a huge impact on those in society with disabilities, She is known as a role model due to her generous amount of physical courage by saving a life of a windsurfer.
In life, one encounters situations where courage is needed to overcome one's fear and make a difference to others. Corey and Theresa; the characters from “The kayak” and “Over the Edge” show exemplary physical courage and make a difference in their societies; they are also seen as role models to many others due to the situation Corey and Theresa
