Power can be can have it’s own meaning to everyone. Some may see power as controlling others, while others see it as the ability to determine what goes on around them. In the poems “Hawk Roosting”, by Ted Hughes, and “Golden Retrievals”, by Mark Doty, the authors use point of view and imagery to illustrate the difference between freedom. Both poems talk about it, just in different ways.

In the “Hawk Roosting” the author talk about freedom as controlling others. The hawk in the poem is egoistic and thinks he owns everything. “The earth’s face upward for my inspection” suggests that he’s looking down on others, he thinks he’s better than the “earth”. “The sun behind me” suggests that he’s more important and everyone is “behind” him.
