Pride and Prejudice and It’s Relevance to the Present
Prompt: How is the work relevant to the present? Pride and Prejudice is a story of the weaknesses of humans, of friendships and the most fundamental of feelings. Jane austen is regarded as one of the greatest authors in literary history. Being a woman, she was forced to publish her works anonymously due to the patriarchy of the 1800s and the expectation that women wrote “silly” novels that couldn’t be taken seriously. Pride and Prejudice was originally titled “First Impressions” and it took about 23 years, considerable revisions, and a name change before it was published. Darcy is seen as an elitist and he looks down upon Elizabeth and the rest of the Bennets because they don't have as much money as he does. as the story progresses, Mr. Darcy discovers he has feelings for Elizabeth Bennet, but it would be frowned upon if he decided to announce his affection to her because the Bennets are considered “middle class” and he has more money than they do. While Mr. Darcy was proposing to Elizabeth “His sense of her inferiority” (austen 179) showed. He was acting as though she should be honoured by him even considering to propose to her, let alone actually proposing. In doing this, he angered Elizabeth, making her say no, and he ruined his first chance at love. This proves that class and wealth played too much of a role in deciding love and marriages in the 1800s. almost 300 years later, we still see remnants of this, but in a lesser form. For instance, several celebrities are notorious for marrying older people because they have a deeper pocket then they do. This can be said for both men and women. Britney Spears married a man named Jason alexander who was, in fact, 20 years older than her. The reason could have been “love” but when you really think about how long they were married, 55 hours, money was very likely the motive. another example of classism getting in the way of marriage is when Prince William married Kate Middleton. England had to go through a long process of dissolving laws to allow for a Prince to marry a non royal
