Comparing Soldier's Home And Miss Brill

Many characters are alike in different stories that authors write and readers can see that with each story. A great example of two characters being alike would be “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway and “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield. The story “Soldier’s Home” is about a young soldier, named Krebs, coming home and his views of the world being different than when he left. “Miss Brill” is about an elder woman who goes to town to people watch only to find out she is alike the people she criticizes. The stories sound very different, but these characters share similarities and differences that make them alike and unique at the same time. A major similarity between Krebs and Miss Brill is that they are both isolated individuals. In “Soldier’s Home,” Krebs does not seem to enjoy the company of others because he doesn’t want to lie to them. With “Soldier’s Home,” by Hemingway, the narrator describes that Krebs “wanted to live alone without any consequences,” giving the idea that Krebs was fine being alone (163). In “Miss Brill,” she is always alone other than when she is reading to the elderly man. “Miss Brill” by Mansfield and “Soldier’s Home” by Hemingway are two completely different stories but the characters are alike. With each story, the reader can tell the similarities and the differences and can likely figure out what will happen after the text has ended. The reader may feel bad for the characters because they both share isolation and during their free time they people watch, but also because Miss Brill has under-estimated her reality. Authors never mean to make their characters or stories similar to another authors but it occasionally happens, and that is why we have individuals like Miss Brill and Krebs to compare and
