Edgar Allen Poe was a very famous writer who liked to include mystery and horror into his writing. In Poe’s story “The Black Cat” the narrator is a drunk who kills his cat and even his wife. When the police come to his house to inspect everything, they eventually find the body of his deceased wife and cat within the walls of his house. In his story “The Masque Of The Red Death” the prince has all of his closest friends and family in his castle to keep everyone safe from the plaque. Then an unwanted guest comes into his castle and is finally revealed to be a ghost. The prince and all of his guest soon finds out you can't escape death, which is inevitable. In Poe’s story “The Black Cat” he includes many characteristics of the gothic horror genre. In the story, the narrator feels the need to hang his cat he loves dearly, for no apparent reason, he does this to show the psychological characteristic of gothic horror. When the narrator is taking his cat down to a tree to hang him, he states “I felt it had given me no reason of offense; hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin a deadly sin”(Poe 7). The narrator knew that he was doing something horrific, but that's why he wanted to do it. A physiological problem can make people do things they wouldn't normally do and will most likely regret later. Another characteristic of gothic horror is death. The narrator in “The Black Cat” tends to lose his temper and when his wife was trying to save the cat from getting killed the narrator murdered her “Goaded by the inference into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain.
