Comparing The Colonel And Hitler's First Photograph

In literature, there are many works that resemble one another in some way; whether it be from the meaning, imagery, or by the overall structure of the work. As there are many works, there’s bound to be one that’s like it in some way. Often times, the audience doesn’t really realize two works are alike until they analyze each of them in depth. Although sometimes the works may mention a closely related topic in the title or throughout the work, it gives you the idea that they may have similarities and/or differences. For example, The Colonel by Carolyn Forché and Hitler’s First Photograph by Wislawa Szymborska are two poems that come off to have a slightly related topic within their titles but not enough to automatically assume they may go hand in hand with one another.
These two poems don’t initially give off the feeling of them having much similarity but in a way, the audience may find a miniscule connection just by looking at the titles. For example, in Hitler’s First Photograph, Adolf Hitler is mentioned. He was a dictator who convinced many people that what he was doing to the Jews, was right. Eventually, people realized what he was doing and he then became a strongly disliked human being. On the other hand, The Colonel, by Carolyn Forché mentions a colonel which

While reading this poem, readers are able to visualize Adolf as a baby, in a way. The author says using a calm tone, “Precious little angel, mommy’s sunshine, honeybun.” (Line 11). Then continues to illustrate the setting by using descriptive words such as, “spring sun, geraniums in the windows, // the organ-grinder’s music in the yard, // a lucky fortune wrapped in rosy paper” (Lines 14-16). These lines help create a visual for the audience to imagine and it supports the meaning more. Also, this author uses end-stopped lines to demonstrate a pause for the readers so they can contemplate what they read and understand
