In most novels, the main character goes on a journey, and during their journey, they face many difficult challenges. After the character returns from their journey, they often emerge wiser and victorious. In Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road, the man and son go on an epic journey in a post-apocalyptic world in search of the southern coast. McCarthy uses harsh climate conditions, interactions between the father and son, and events with strangers the two main characters meet on their journey to show that people will either completely throw away their morals or stick with them to the end when the situation grows dire. One way McCarthy conveys the theme of what people will do in extreme situations is through the relationship of the father, also
