Salem Witch Trials and the Puritans The Puritans were group of colonists who left England in the late 16th century seeking religious tolerance. The Puritans believed God had supremacy over everything, including the government, and they were predestined by God whether they would or would not be saved. They urged strict moral beliefs, based laws around the church, and placed a high value on hard work. They are considered to be religious fanatics meaning they take their religion to the extreme, letting it control everything in their daily life. Their hysterical fanaticism led them to the Salem Witch Trials and caused sin, crime, and violation of Biblical laws. The Puritans belief system was stringent and had little toleration for other religions.
