Things Fall Apart, is a novel of a strong leader named Okonkwo. He lives in an Ibo village in Nigeria called Umuofia. He is an Igbo warrior who has strong beliefs of the gods in his culture and who is wanting to expel the British empire before it takes control of his country. On the other hand, The Tragedy of Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare. The main character of Othello is Othello. Othello is a general leading the Venetian forces against the Turkish. His unending love for Desdemona leads him to pain and misfortune. Both Okonkwo and Othello are characterized as tragic heroes whose lives end in sorrow and misery. One of the reasons of his downfall is the relationship that he has with his son Nwoye. At first, Okonkwo struggles with Nwoye’s laziness and his habit of acting women-like. As the story progresses, there is a conflict when Nwoye converts to Christianity and rejects his native religion as well as his father. The relationship that Okonkwo has with son reminds him of his father Unoka and how he despised him for being ill-fated. Another reason for his downfall is himself. His excessive obsession with masculinity makes him emotionless. Showing any sign of emotion will make his tribe view him as a weak person. His main goal in life was to build a farm in which his children could live and take control once he died. He also wanted to have many titles and be and honorable and moral leader. He was constantly trying to live up to the standards of people and show his tribe that he is worth something and that he is a strong man worthy of respect. Another reason for Okonkwo's downfall would be his struggle with religion. His downfall starts when he beats his wife during Week Peace and is punished by the earth god. As the story progresses, Okoronkwo constantly struggles with religion especially when most of his tribe starts to convert to Christianity. Okonkwo loses his more loved son, Ikemefuna. He had a strong relationship with Ikemefuna that he considered him his only son since he considered Nwoye a woman. In addition, he loses his land and his crops. When he killed the boy during Ezeudu's funeral he was sentenced to seven years of exile. He then loses his son Nwoye because Nwoye decides to convert to Christianity. In this case, Okonkwo disowns him and doesn’t want to know anything about him. During this acts of crime, he slowly becomes more aggressive and starts to lose his reasoning. He believes that the only way to restore his life is through getting revenge on the Christian missionaries. While plotting his revenge against the missionaries, he kills a messenger sent by the District Commissioner. Once he killed the man, he realizes that his tribe won’t fight and that it was truly falling apart. In losing his morals and his mind, he decides that killing himself is the easiest way to end his suffering. On the other hand, Othello loses his morality and has become credulous. He let Iago manipulate him and turn him aggressive because Desdemona was cheating on him with Cassio. His consequence in believing that Desdemona was cheating on him was that he killed her.
