By comparing Walt Whitman's “I Hear America Singing” to Langston Hughes' “I, Too, Sing, America”, it becomes clear that these poems show more differences in their views of America. To begin, Walt Whitman views America as a place of unity where every person has a set role. America sings because everyone has a specified place in society and a different usefulness they bring. However, Langston Hughes sees America as a place that is still divided. Becoming part of America's song requires African Americans to change their traditional roles. These poems differ because “I Hear America Singing” views America as a great nation because of its roles ans stereotypes while “I, Too, Sing America” argues America needs to change its view on stereotypes.
