To be an American means to be dedicated, to love, and be proud of one’s country and the history it possesses. Some people believe that an American is someone who is conceited and believes their country is the greatest. An American’s relationship should be more than “wanting to be free” but it should be about being a part of the variety of cultures and diversity this great country has to offer. Some immigrants that came did not have the same experience as others. As Yezierska says in her short story,”America and I” she talks about how she felt when she first came to America. “I was in America, among the Americans but not of them.” (Yezierska 17) she felt that she did not belong.
