Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president of the United States. He was loved by the Union and he made it his goal for the Union to prevail no matter what. He did not really mention anything about slavery as he was president and needed to unify the country. Fredrick Douglass was a great abolitionist, who was an escaped slave. He promoted the end of slavery and the rights for colored people. In these two speeches these men express goals for our nation. During the reconstruction period the actions taken for these goals in the reconstruction period did not achieve full freedom for all, but it was a step closer to their goals.

As Abraham Lincoln gave his Emancipation Proclamation speech, he stated that he would free all slaves in the nation. This famous speech was given on January 1, 1863. He passed down this proclamation as an executive order. All of this brought anger to the white southerners, but joy to the African American slaves and anti-slavery forces. This is no wonder that Abraham Lincoln was sadly assassinated on April 15, 1865.

He gave his famous speech on July 4, 1862. This was the day of the United States independence from British rule, and the people of Rochester asked him to delivery a speech as apart of their celebration. In the speech, he sounds almost annoyed and unhappy about the fact that the white citizens supposedly celebrate freedom. He knew that at the time African Americans were not free at all. He suggested that he wanted to grant colored people rights to be able to be a citizen just like the white people.
