Have you ever felt great distress towards your parents because you believed that they were doing something for their own good? I can’t speak for you, but they were probably doing it for your betterment. The excerpt of Confetti Girl is about a girl who disputes her father’s extreme interest in English since she feels he places more importance on his teaching career than on her. The short story Tortilla Sun is a narrative on how a teenager disagrees with her mother’s decision to take a trip to Costa Rica to finish her research while she is being sent to stay with her grandmother. The text implies that her dad has a great passion for his job as an English teacher. Furthermore, she does not like to read and shows resentment towards her father’s interests. However, her dad tries to impose his likes on his daughter. During a conversation between the narrator and her father, the dad demonstrates his interest in reading by enthusiastically questioning her about her assignments and offering her his own copy of the book. Meanwhile, his daughter shows her lack of interest by saying, “‘...I left [the book] in my locker. I guess I can’t do my homework’” (López, 24). This piece of textual evidence portrays the main character’s carelessness for her reading assignment and her dad’s enjoyment of books. After the narrator’s father finds the book and gives it to her, she tells the audience, “...I put the book on my nightstand and use it as a coaster.
