The film Ever After by Andy Tennant has created a subversion of the Grimm brothers Cinderella story through investigating the set up qualities and ethics of key characters throughout the film and text. Through exploring the character of the prince allows for the idea of social obligations to come through and the differentiating ideas between the two characters to emerge. A key theme that has contradicting views throughout Ever After and the Grimm’s Brothers is the idea of a women’s role in society. The idea of social hierarchy is a key theme that emerges in the film and text, the idea that Cinderella and Danielle were seen as lower because they were slaves. Through the use of dialogue when the prince first finds out who Cinderella is, “The prince looked in her face, he knew again the beautiful maiden that had danced with him” emphasises that even when he found out that she was a slave and that she wasn’t of the right status to be marrying him, he did not let that stop him. His obligations as a prince where set aside because he believed love was more important than his obligations as a prince. Through the use of mid shot when the prince in Ever After finds out who Danielle really is, “the apple, that was you” demonstrates that he cares about his obligations as a prince more than the love he had for Danielle. His first reaction to finding out who Danielle really was emphasised that the love he first felt for her was not as important as maintaining his social obligations as a prince. Tennant’s version of the Cinderella story has created a subversion regarding the social obligations of the prince, in Grimm’s version the prince doesn’t let his obligations get in the way of love but in Ever After the princes first instincts is to maintain his status rather than the love he has for
