One of the most important things an artist can do to a piece of art is, apply the formal elements of art to convey the meaning of that piece. The culture in which the artwork was produced and the artistic movement in which it was produced also play a role in conveying the meaning of the piece. Although Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” and Eugene Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People” are scenes depicting battles, the cultures that affected these works differ significantly. Picasso’s canvas comes during the time of the Spanish Civil War and the art movement of cubism. Cubism focused on geometric forms, the fragmentation of an object and increasing abstraction. Within the canvas the sense of any foreground is eliminated due to the overlapping images. Another formal element that allows the elimination of the foreground is the use of colors. Picasso painted his canvas using simple shades of gray, blue, and white. Robinson references Picasso’s use of color a symbol for a newspaper. She also states that the newspaper reference is even more fruitful in the design of the horse and how the hair looks like newspaper writing. The bodies in the painting are mostly boxy and geometrically shaped. Light is also manipulated in this canvas. The lightbulb at the top of the canvas has a triangle stemming down from the top to the bottom of the canvas highlighting the center figures. Picasso creates motion in this canvas with the help of visual perspective. One’s eyes are immediately drawn to the right side of the canvas where the three women seem to be moving towards the left.
