John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was born in normal family. His father was a Congregationalist deacon, farmer, cordwainer, and lieutenant in the militia and his mother was descendant of the Boylstons of Brookline. He was the oldest son in his family. Because it was tradition for the oldest son to attend a college, his parents expected him to go to the college. However, He wanted to be a farmer like his father and he did not enjoy reading books.

His father wanted John to attend Harvard University and become a minister. When John Adams was 8 years old, he studied in a Latin School. He disliked his masters and did not excel academically. When he was fourteen years old, his father hired Joseph Marsh who took charge of the Latin School. He had a great influence on John Adams. He taught John Adams with great discipline. Therefore, John was ready to pass the admission exams to Harvard in less than a year. He was accepted to Harvard College as his father wanted at age fifteen in 1751. His first job was teacher at Central School of Worcester because he needed the money to pay for his law education. However, he was not sure that legal career is what he wanted and it took time to overcome the uncertainty about whether legal career was his vocation or not. Finally, Adams launched his legal career in Boston in 1758. He faced many problems in establishing his practice. However, he began to represent for Abigail Smith at the court when his practice started to flourish. By 1770, Adams became a highly successful lawyer in Boston and he was chosen to defend the British soldiers who were charged in the Boston Massacre in March
