“The Magician’s Nephew” is a novel that takes place around 1900 in London, England. Two of the story’s main characters are Polly Plummer and Digory Kirke. Throughout the story they meet and become close friends through unique circumstances. Now lets take a closer look at their friendship. When the two kids have their first encounter, it is clear that Digory has been crying. Polly then discovers that Digory’s mother is dying. Polly also comes to find out that Digory is living next door with his aunt and uncle who are assisting his ill mother. Digory is lonely and has suspisions about his uncle Andrew. As Polly touched the ring, she disapperared. Digory is furious at his uncle and realizes he had this planned. Uncle Andrew had been experimenting with these items from his godmother, yet he had only tested them out on guinee pigs. Uncle Andrew belives that the green rings are able to bring them back, but he reminds Digory that Polly doesn’t have a green ring. Digory then decides to go to the other world to get Polly by touching a yellow ring. Digory puts the green rings in his pockets before transporting to the other world. As I analyize this part of the story, I see many unique concepts about Digory and Polly’s friendship. Digory, for a young boy, is facing many challenges at an early age. He is being raised by an aunt and an auncle who he fears. He also feels very lonely and has no friends he can play witgh. I cannot imagine being a boy that has to lose his ill mother while is father is away in India. There is no better timing, so we think, for Digory to meet Polly. Polly becomes a nice friend to Digory and they quickly start having lots of fun together. We can see that this really is a big help for poor Digory.
