These past six chapters have offered many perspective on what burnout is and how it relates and can be applied to people in helping professions. Because I am not a professional with years of experience, I have to say it is hard for me to pinpoint which type of burnout resonates closely with me. However, even though I may not have the professional experience I do play a social role as a care giver and with that outlook I can say that compassion burnout speaks most directly to me. Compassion burnout, as identified by Figley, is “the natural consequent behaviors and emotions resulting from knowing about a traumatizing even experienced by a significant other - the stress resulting from helping or wanting to help a traumatized or suffering person.”
