The meaning of altruistic behaviors comes from natural selection of adaption. The definition of altruism is Altruism is when we act to promote someone else’s welfare, even at a risk or cost to ourselves. Natural selection should favor organisms with traits that increase survival and reproduction in their environment (known as selfish traits). Learning about Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is rooted in an evolutionary, functional analysis of basic social motivational systems. (Gilbert,2014).
