Competitive fishing started out for most people as just a hobby and something that they could do just to get away from the world in their free time. But it has expanded into something much bigger and better than just a hobby today. Millions of dollars are made each year across the world by anglers that compete in the sport of bass fishing. As B.A.S.S shows in their historic timeline, idea of competitive fishing was created by a man named Ray Scott in 1967 while he was watching a basketball game. He made the rules to be ethical, safety, and conservation. Jeff Jacoby states in the article Catch and Release fishing is inhumane, “But finding gratification in the suffering of another isn’t sport. Its sadism.” There is an organization that goes by PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA think that competitive fishing is wrong because fish feel pain just like humans do. They believe the fish will die later down the road due to being caught by an angler, but this is not true. Thousands of fish are caught each day and there are very few amounts that will die if they are caught and released right. There are many of things that an angler can do to lower the risk of the death of a fish in his possession. There are many supplements that are put into the water that keeps the fish alive if you do have something that does go wrong and you think the fish will die. Losing a fish due to death will penalize the angler in the tournament, and this is the last thing they want. One major impact for anglers and the love for fishing is that you meet a variety of different people going from state to state to fish different tournaments. After getting bass fishing in the schools there are kids that had horrible graded that wanted to fish, just from the love for fishing and them being on the team it motivated them to do better in school and keep their grades up so they could have something to look forward to. Fishing is more than just a hobby for some people, the sport takes patience and a lot of skill. I have grown up my whole life fishing and for many years now have fished at the higher level and today I now fish for a collegiate team at western Kentucky university. It’s also something that is good for kids to participate in because I believe it teaches kids integrity and honesty; because while they are out on a lake fishing a tournament, there is nobody else out there to make sure they are doing the right thing and not
