There are many football teams at the high school, college and NFL levels across the world. Football is the poster child of concussions in sports. Nearly half of reported concussions in high school sports come from football. It also has the highest per capita number of concussions of any sport, at a rate of 70.4. Helmet to helmet contact is often considered the leading cause of concussions in football, though any hard tackle is enough to give someone a concussion. The adult brain is a three pound organ that basically floats inside the skull. When the brain moves rapidly inside the skull, a concussion has technically occurred. One effect that can lead to a concussion is a direct blow to the head or a whiplash effect to the body, which happens a lot in football. “High school football players are nearly twice as likely to sustain a concussion” (Breslow)as are college players, but it remains unclear as to whether repetitive head injuries can lead to long-term brain disease. The study, which was of a peer-reviewed study on head trauma in a variety of high school sports, estimated that high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 games and practices. Although, I think that concussions will forever be a problem in the NFL, college and at the high school level it is quite possible to cut the amount of concussions that have been happening around the world. For example, scientists and other people are trying to stop concussions by making the helmets that football players use more protective. They are doing this by putting more cushions in the helmet, and by designing the helmet in different ways so that helmet to helmet hits aren’t as bad. Concussions are a very serious injury and people may not know they are this serious. I hope more awareness happens to spread the world about the dangers of
